ABOUT ME
I am a medical doctor, fully registered with the General Medical Council and with 20 years of clinical experience. I have worked for almost 10 years as a Consultant Psychiatrist. My main employment is with the NHS, and I also offer therapy services on a private basis.
For your reassurance, I have full professional insurance and am checked to the enhanced level with the Disclosure and Barring Service (previously CRB). I am in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and fully up to date with medical appraisal.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
In our sessions, we will aim to develop a greater awareness of the issues that have brought you to therapy. Through this focus, it is possible to understand how the past is relevant to the present, and for this to help in your future choices. This can assist in avoiding the repetition of unhelpful or unwanted patterns in your relationships, or in your own thoughts and feelings.
I am currently training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) with ISTDP-UK. More details about ISTDP can be found here; https://www.istdp.org.uk/
ISTDP-UK trainers and Core Trainings are accredited by the International Association of Experiential Dynamic Therapies (IEDTA), the international accrediting body for the group of psychotherapies that have developed based on ISTDP principles. Sessions are video recorded and may be shared with a senior clinical supervisor, for additional reassurance.

MORE ABOUT ISTDP
Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) is an accelerated model of dynamic psychotherapy. ISTDP comprises a set of powerful interventions to alleviate symptoms of emotional distress and to promote mental health in a rapid and cost-effective way. The focus is on the unconscious emotional processes that underlie many psychological as well as somatic difficulties.
The distinctive characteristics of ISTDP are:
The depth to which unconscious feelings are experienced in a full and healthy way
A focus on unconscious anxiety pathways and anxiety regulation
The degree of clarity and focus on maladaptive defences
Audio-visual recording of all sessions - these may be shared with a senior clinical supervisor for your additional reassurance
Whilst ISTDP has shared roots with classical psychoanalysis, it also differs in important ways. The ISTDP therapist is not ‘neutral’ but rather is an active advocate for change and health. Instead of making interpretations, the ISTDP therapist emphasises the importance of experiencing core emotions and relies on non-interpretative interventions to address anxiety and defences. In this way, emotional processing is bolstered and freedom gained from distressing symptoms and maladaptive patterns of behaviour relating to self and to others.
An extensive body of published research evidence supports the efficacy of ISTDP as a treatment for a wide variety of emotional problems. These include depression, anxiety, psychosomatic illness and personality disorders. Studies demonstrate that benefits are not only maintained in the long term but can also increase after therapy ends.
